One of WA’s biggest insurers is warning of a home burglary spike this Christmas after insurance claims for last year showed at least 12 homes a day were robbed over the holiday period.
Figures to be released today by RAC Insurance show it received 506 home burglary claims valued at more than $2 million between December 16 last year and January 31.
RAC Insurance manager Glen Walker said that on average a dozen WA homes were hit every day during the festive season, a 13 per cent rise on the burglary average for the rest of the year.
“The last thing we want is the heartache of people experiencing a home burglary, especially at Christmas,” he said.
“What we saw last year over that Christmas holiday period ... was 506 burglary claims. That is just with RAC and that is a quite staggering number for such a short period of time.
“As much as you might be insured, what insurance can’t do is replace the sentiment that is attached to some items.”
Mr Walker said the loss of jewellery was the most claimed item by members but wallets, phones and iPads were also a growing target.
“Given the WA lifestyle we enjoy over the summer break, we are entertaining in the backyard with friends and family over for barbecues,” he said.
“It can be simple stuff like locking the front door once your guests arrive that stops you becoming a victim.”
Mr Walker said the Christmas period was also a time when people were away on holidays. “Our advice is to always ensure your home doesn’t look vacant when you go away,” he said.
