A 57-year-old man bitten by a shark on the arm while snorkelling in Exmouth yesterday said the possibility of a shark attack was “always in the back of your mind”.
Peter O’Halloran was snorkelling about 400m east of the Exmouth marina when the attack happened about 9am. He was flown to Perth yesterday for surgery, but his injuries were not life threatening.
“It goes right through the meat,” he said, showing media an X-ray of his injuries.
“They said there was a bit of bone missing. That’s right through the top, through all the meat there.”
Asked if it was painful, Mr O’Halloran said: “Nah, not a problem.”
He said he’d been swimming at that spot for years.
The possibility of a shark attack was something he often thought about. “Always in the back of your mind,” he said.
Fisheries officers are working to identify the type of shark, and will be on the water until this afternoon monitoring the area.
The beach will be closed 1km either side of the marina for at least another day.
