Two young men have been charged over an attack on an elderly shopkeeper in Mandurah on Saturday.

Sam Baldacchino, a 71-year-old grandfather, was preparing his fruit stall in the Smart Street Mall when he was set upon — in front of his horrified wife.

Police say the two men approached Mr Baldacchino and began throwing fruit in his face

Mr Baldacchino has had x-rays and a CAT scan, revealing he has up to 20 fractures around his eye socket. He may need surgery.

“When I was on the ground and I was getting hit I thought this is it, this is the end of it — but then he stopped and ran away,” Mr Baldacchino said.

A 19-year-old Secret Harbour man has been charged with aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm, stealing and disorderly behaviour.

He will appear in the Mandurah Magistrate’s Court on July 5.

A WA Police spokesperson said a 20-year-old Port Kennedy man will be charged with similar offences by summons.
