A 57-year-old man who was bitten by a shark off Exmouth over the weekend says he's itching to get back in the water.

Peter O'Halloran was snorkelling 400 meters off the marina in the Exmouth Gulf when a shark grabbed hold of his arm.

“Halfway through a dive, going down, I just felt something chewing on my arm,” he said.

“I saw some movement and by the time I looked at the wound to what ever it was, it was gone.”

The Exmouth local was left with a 10 centimetre-long wound down to the bone on his elbow, although he still doesn’t know what sort of shark attacked him.

He was flown to Perth for surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

He said the ordeal isn’t going to keep him out of the water.
